€7M Catalan Alternative Protein Research Centre Announced

There was more good news for Europe’s sector with the establishment of the €7 million Center for Innovation in Alternative Proteins in Catalonia (CiPA), focussing on research into protein sources including plant and algae-based, fermentation-made meat.

Based across various hubs throughout Catalonia, CiPA seeks to realise the opportunity offered by alternative proteins to the Catalan agrifood sector, building essential infrastructure including research facilities and pilot plants.

With backing from the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda of the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Institute of Agri-Food Research and Technology (IRTA), this is another welcome sign of public investment in the potential of these foods.
